Welcome to the Back of the Flock, where we are slowed down by swapping out the winter and summer clothes bins, planning grad parties, washing out the kiddie pool from last year, and the general chaos that is MAYCEMBER, as
calls it.We’re going to get right to the snacks today because it’s 80*F and sunny in Minnesota, and I found a wise Snack Crone at last week’s baseball game -
this grandmother who had packed caramel corn, regular popcorn, licorice, and not one, but two types of homemade cookies in gallon-sized Ziplocs to share with her fam as they cheered on their buddy in the field. She is goals.
Let’s Get to the Snacks!
📖 READ: I haven’t read much this month because I have been maxing out the language center of my brain writing my book proposal. But I happily traversed through Instructions for Traveling West by
. I love her poetry so much, and I’ve read her book twice through already. I also pre-read the YA book Pax by Sarah Pennypacker to see if it would be a good read-aloud, and I was so, so sad when it was over. Such a good read!🎧 LISTEN: I stumbled across the song Older by Lizzy McAlpine while I was driving the other day, and I nearly had to pull over. This song IMMEDIATELY calmed my nervous system. I’ve also recently fallen in love with the crazy-clever songwriting of J. Maya; her song Sunday Crossword is a wordplay dream, and I loved all of the mythology she wove into Achilles Heel.
📺 WATCH: I haven’t watched much since our baseball season started, and I’ve been falling asleep before the opening credits of most shows are over. But I’m SO EXCITED for the return Trying season 4 on Apple TV this month. It’s like Ted Lasso but less soccer and more family, infertility, adoption. You’ll love every character.
🥘 EAT: I recently tried this Sheet Pan Kielbasa-Potato-Veggie Bake, and by some miracle, every member of my family loved it. (even though one child who shall remain unnamed, doused it in ketchup)

I passed these snacks to some friends and we were all laughing about the blessing flowers 😂🙏🏻 I’m in a season where I need to laugh more.
“a wise snack crone” is now what I aspire to be in life.
